[RING RING RING ring ring ring ring banana phone, it's Ted — Ted, who has questions. Ted, who feels like the wheels in his brain have been spinnin' in mud. It's a mess in there.
He almost hangs up before he's able to leave a message, but — ]
Hey, Steve, it's Ted. I've been thinkin' about what you said, about folks goin' home, and — well, since you offered, here I am. Can we talk?
[ It's a little while before Steve calls back. He had to finish his painting and then clean his brushes and hands before he's really untangled enough to return the call. ]
Hi, Ted. You wanted to talk. Would you prefer over the phone or we could meet for lunch?
[ In return, Steve gifts him an orange wrapped in newspaper and a small painting of their mother looking out the small, dirty window of their tenement apartment. ]
[ On the evening before Christmas, Steven drops off a package for Steve wrapped in red and silver paper. Inside, Steve will find a pair of fuzzy slipper socks and a mug with some assorted local teas.
There's also a handwritten note: Thank you for the lovely party, it was a wonderful start to the season. Now time for you to relax! Happy Christmas :) - Steven ]
[ Steve gets a nice bottle of wine, and a model plane to build. "After you get done with this, we'll work on how you can repair the Stomper on the fly. ~TS" ]
( under the tree, there's a tidy bundled package marked for steve. it's rather lumpy, wrapped in butcher paper.
upon opening it, he'll find afewpolos that have been tailored to fit him perfectly. folded between them is a fresh container of styling pomade, lightly lemon scented, and carbon fiber comb that prevents static. )
( he knocks before using the key, a bit of forewarning so as not to cause alarm. steve probably isn't anywhere near as paranoid as he is about being jumped, but bucky thinks it's probably still the polite thing, even if he's very much accustomed to having barged into steve's place without notice, back before the war. texting has really changed things, huh?
peeking in first, he makes sure libby isn't in the way of the door before stepping in, paper bag of ingredients for cabbage soup bundled in his left arm. )
Steve?
The corned beef was actually on sale for once, so I got some, too. Figured we could add it to the soup and liven it up a bit more, but you can probably use it for anything else if we have leftovers.
( and there probably will be leftovers, since that's how bucky is used to cooking these days. he plans to take a portion home, though. super soldier appetites pretty much thrive on leftovers. )
[ He'd left the gallery early to make sure he was home in time for these plans. It wasn't like the place was busy enough that both of them had to stick around all the time. Steve was happy to watch it for him.
Libby hops down from the couch and comes running to rub against Bucky's ankles as soon as he's inside the apartment and generally get in the way like she's part house cat. ]
I still find it kinda weird they make corned beef here. [ He comes to meet Bucky and take some of the groceries from him. ]
How much soup are we making? I assume enough to feed the Army with your appetite.
Hey, Lib, ( he murmurs gently as he reaches down to offer her a light scritch before heading toward the kitchen. )
Y'know, I was actually thinking how lucky that is, for us to have it here at all, but then again I'm not really sure how the sheep at the market that I buy my bread from makes her bread either. Maybe they got some special way to make different foods here. I'm always surprised what I manage to find at the grocer's or the farmer's market.
( pausing to let steve take one of the bags, he sets the other down on the counter to start unpacking. )
I got half a dozen cabbages, so, uh, at least a giant pot's worth. And I'm gotta take some back for Steve, too, so maybe a whole other pot on the side? ( he glances to steve sheepishly, offering a lighthearted grin. )
If you want, we could make a game of it. See who can make a better pot. ( the way he smiles says bucky is more than fine with working on the both in tandem though. ) D'ya think Libby like cabbage?
It might be magic. You've met the frog ramen guy right? [ Steve introduced him to that food. It's great. One of his favorites. Like chicken noodle but better. ] And Ted and I found this ice cream shop that was definitely run by a dog person. Spirit?
[ He's still not sure what's the correct way to refer to the residents of Folkmore. They are spirits but they're also animals... or just look like them? One of these days he's just going to ask. ]
Well, I only have one proper soup pot. [ Steve helps unload the groceries before he goes to get said soup pot out from a cabinet. He hauls it onto the stove with a little grunt. ] If you want to make a second one I think I might have a deep sauce pan?
[ He cooks a little bit but not anything too complicated. His kitchen and the supplies in it are very basic. ]
Go ahead and give her a piece. We'll see if she eats it. I'm not racing you. You chop like a man possessed.
[Delivered in a pale pink box embossed with Hoot Couture in gold along the top, Steve will find his ordered dress - red and form-fitting, with a full-bodied, slitted skirt - wrapped beautifully in a heap of matching pink and gold tissue paper. And there on the top, is a matching postcard that reads:]
Thank you for letting Hoot Couture make your Valentine's Day something special! Enjoy your beautiful night! xxxx Rue
[ooc: feel free to make the dress however you like!! I just thought her powerful arms and shoulders would be the star of the show in this style]
It's probably one of those "mid" times of day, well after breakfast, but not lunch or dinner when Natasha knocks on Steve's door. She's actually a little nervous about her intended birthday present for him, and has an alternative plan handy if it's more responsibility than he wants, but...
...well, after their conversation about the Red Room, the idea had wormed its way into in her head and refused to dislodge. So here she is! With a present for Steve on his birthday, hoping he's actually home. She probably should have texted first.
Luckily, Steve is an early riser and answers the door seconds after her knock. He smiles at Natasha, though he's clearly a little surprised to see her outside his door.
"Hi," he says brightly. "Uh... did we make plans and I forgot?"
That happens sometimes with his memory. It's not common but sometimes he can forget things. Usually they're about himself not plans or appointments but hey, things happen when your brain was scrambled up.
Natasha immediately and belatedly realizes that her birthday present would probably have a better chance of acceptance if she'd just left it on his door. (But that wouldn't have been fair. If he didn't want it, he needed an off ramp.)
"No, you didn't forget anything." She gives him a quick smile, nerves carefully hidden. "I just came to drop off your birthday present. And - explain it."
"Ooh, a birthday gift with an explanation. That's got to be good." Steve smiles to reassure her. He really does appreciate a gift even though they've only just started being friends.
He holds the door open a little wider. "Do you want to come inside?"
She seems a bit unsure so they can stay in the hall if she wants. He's always glad to host a friend.
[On the morning of his birthday, Steve will find a small box and a white envelope on his porch. The box contains cufflinks, customized with a picture of Tiny and Captain Carter dancing together, a picture Bucky clearly took at Peggy's birthday party. The envelope contains a gift certificate to Steve's favourite clothing shop in Folkmore, good for a tailored tux, and the following note:]
